Makerere University has suspended two officials from the Department of Procurement and Disposal Unit over alleged gross misconduct and abuse of office.
Those suspended are the department manager Levi Tushabe and his deputy Francis Ninyenda.
The duo is accused of approving the hiring of extra chairs that were used during the 67th graduation ceremony at the university without authorization from the contracts committee.
The suspension followed investigation into the award of contracts during the preparation of the graduation ceremony which recommended suspension of the two employees to pave way for investigations.
A letter dated April 21 from the office of the Vice Chancellor, Prof Ddumba Ssentamu, addressed to Tushabe and his deputy, states that the two officials grossly flouted the Public Procurement and Disposal of Public Assets Authority Act, 2014, acted unethically and fronted Deen Establishment Limited which is not tax compliant and has not been remitting workers’ savings to the NSSF.
The two officials’ suspension comes barely four weeks after the Deputy Registrar, Margaret Etuusa was also suspended for allegedly collecting money from parents and students for safe custody of their phones and other gadgets during the graduation ceremony without the knowledge of the university.
