Makerere University students have this morning gone on strike, demanding resumption of lectures.
The students have not had lectures for two weeks now, after the lecturers went on strike. Led by the guild leadership, the students first toured the classrooms but found that most did not have on going lecturers.
A section of lecturers have resumed work today, while others insist on continuing with their strikle. Lecturers were noted in some classes at the school of education, political science, IT and that of Botany and Zeology.
The lecturers under the Makerere University Academic Staff Association are divided on whether or not to proceed with their strike that has gone on for 2weeks now.
Where as the association chairperson Tanga Odoi has called off the strike, a section of the teaching staff want it to continue as they demand a pay rise, with the least paid lecturer recieving 8 million Shillings.
The students have now converged at the University main gate and they are demanding to be addressed by the education minister on their fate before they leave.
The police has also been heavily deployed at the campus to mantain peace.
The students vandalised some items including kiosks at the university as they began their demonstration.
