| September 23, 2011

Makerere University staff have resolved to call their off their strike, in a move that could see it re-opened soon.

The University was closed at the beginning of this month following a protracted strike by both academic and administrative staff.

An agreement was signed yesterday, with the government committing to paying the pension arrears as the lecturers pursue legal action against NIC.

According to the agreement, the money will be paid in 3 phases before the end of this financial, with the first installment worth 5billion Shillings expected in November.

The Makerere University Staff Association spokesperson Louis Kakinda says the decision on when to re-open the university is now up to the University Council.
