As a strategy to Make Makerere University financially independent from government, an entity of the university called Makerere University Endowment Fund has come out to champion this cause by soliciting for resources that will financially sustain the institute.
Addressing journalists at the University the Chairperson of the Endowment Fund, Dr. Martin Jerome Aliker says they have organized a marathon as one of the initiatives to raise money for the construction of a student’s center.
Aliker says the construction of the student’s center estimated to costs Shs 15 billion is an objective to enhance the learning environment of students at the University.
Meanwhile the Vice Chancellor Dumba Ssentamu has welcomed the initiative saying for long the University has been grappling with inadequate funding and the university has been criticized for only depending on government as a source of financing.
He says the student’s center whose construction is expected to be finished in three years will be used for the University’s 100 years celebrations.
About 10,000 students, Alumni of the University are expected to take part in this marathon on Sunday.
