Emotions ran high in Parliament’s Gender committee after legislators and a minister clashed over the exportation of girls as laborers to foreign countries.
Workers MPs Arinaitwe Rwakajara and Theopista ssentongo had raised the issue of mass exportation of Ugandan girls, with most of them mistreated by their employers.
However, State Minister in charge of Labour, Mwesigwa Rukutana downplayed the matter, saying though the ministry has registered the complaints; the labor exportation companies should not be blamed.
This drew anger from the legislators who accused the ministry of not showing urgent concern for the victims, some who have been permanently maimed.
The ministry told the legislators that Uganda has signed bi-lateral agreements with some countries where labor is exported such as Kuwait and United Arab Emirates to avoid such incidences of exploitation.
