Uganda’s Parliament on Thursday directed the State Minister for Primary Education, Dr. Moriku Joyce Kaducu, to present a statement explaining the Uganda National Examinations Board’s (UNEB) grading of students in the recently released Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) exams.
This directive followed complaints from MPs, including Kalungu West MP Joseph Ssewungu, Gulu City Woman MP Aol Betty Ochan, and the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Joel Ssenyonyi. They expressed shock at receiving numerous calls from teachers and parents seeking clarification on UNEB’s grading system under the new curriculum.
Ssewungu also voiced concerns about the Ministry of Education’s handling of the new A-Level curriculum, which should be implemented for the students whose UCE results were recently released.
“We are seeing every child got result 1 and I’ve been talking to my wife, who is a nursery teacher, she said this time, the results are similar to the way nursery schools are graded,” Ssewungu said.
Minister Kaducu assured the House that she will deliver the statement on February 18, 2025, detailing UNEB’s grading process for the Senior Four students in the recently released exams.
Speaker of Parliament Anita Among challenged the MPs, stating that after receiving the minister’s report on the Senior Four grading under the new curriculum, they would be responsible for explaining the new grading system to schools and parents in their constituencies.
