The state minister for economic monitoring has directed Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) to take over management of the Kampala City Abattoir with immediate effect.
Henry Banyenzaki, also holding portfolio for minister for Kampala asked KCCA to start collecting fees and dues from the abattoir located at plots 1-3 Old Portbell road with immediate effect.
The directive comes amidst protracted wars between the meat dealers under the City Abattoir Traders Development Association and the BHS City Abattoir over the ownership and management of part of the land on which the facility sits.
In his letter to the KCCA executive director, Ms Jennifer Musisi, Mr Banyenzaki orders the city authority to review the leasehold that was given to BHS, accompany owned by city tycoon Hassan Basajjabalaba.
“In order to restore sanity, harmony and proper regulation of the abattoir business, the two organizations, [CATDA and BHS City Abattoir] agreed that KCCA takes over with immediate effect the abattoir at plots 1-3 Old Portbell road,” the letter written on October 28, 2014 reads in paragraph.
