Migrant workers vow to reject new labour agreement

Ritah Kemigisa | February 20, 2023

Migrant workers have threatened to reject the new labour agreement government intends to sign with Kingdom of Saudi Arabia stakeholders if they are not involved.

Government has been carrying out negotiations with Saudi Arabia to have the suspended Bilateral Labour Agreement (BLA) which it signed in 2017 activated before the end of February this year.

The agreement with Saudi Arabia, the most popular destination for migrant workers, was temporarily suspended on December 23, 2022.

Speaking to KFM, the executive director of Migrant Workers Voice Network, Abdallah Kayonde, said much as the government held a meeting with stakeholders late December, the proposals made were not conclusive since they were not given enough time.

Kayonde demands that the new agreement caters for increased salaries of migrant workers and an approved worker’s administrative unit among others.
