Former premier Amama Mbabazi says government should prevail on police officers who are brutal in dispersing protestors.
In a statement released this morning, Mbabazi says nothing justifies brutality and abuse of human rights and this should stop.
He says the brutality expressed against the FDC Presidential aspirant Dr. Kizza Besigye and his colleagues on Saturday on their way to a public meeting in Rukungiri town was shameful and uncalled for.
He also says the shameful treatment of women by the police is indefensible and should never happen again.
Besigye and his supporters were arrested on Saturday as police blocked them from heading to Rukungiri for a rally which he was to address.
Meanwhile, the Uganda Law Society too has spoken out, condemning the brutal treatment of an FDC female supporter by the police urging the force to investigate the conduct of some of its officers.
The Law Society President Ruth Sebatindira says the woman was handled inhumanely adding that the government should sensitize and train the police on how best to handle conflict ahead of the 2016 elections.
She says such incidents will be happening during this period and police should be well conversant with how to handle rights issues.
Ms Sebatindira adds that besides police investigations, the Electoral Commission should also sensitise the candidates and politicians vying for various posts on electoral laws and come up with a clear guidance on campaigns and consultations to avoid such ugly incidents.
In response, the Police say it has now begun investigating the case of a woman who was allegedly undressed during arrest as FDC supporters headed for a rally in Rukungiri on Saturday.
Fatuma Naigaga who is currently detained at the Central Police Station is yet to record a statement together with three female officers who arrested her.
These include Miriam Kabugho, Enid Kabamanya and Grace Adit.
Police spokesman Fred Enanga insists the media doctored the video to show the police undressing the FDC supporter.
He says the victim undressed herself willingly in protest of the arrests that were being carried out.
Enanga says after investigations they will be able to confirm whether or not the victim undressed herself.
