The construction of a rural cancer research center in Mayuge district is near completion.

The center which cost an estimated of Sh 300 million is to facilitate research on the different types of cancer in rural areas.

An oncologist at the Uganda Cancer Institute Dr. Fred Okuku says the center will also be instrumental in training of experts in identification of cancers.

He says the center in Kampala has only been providing cancer statistics for the urban settings.

Cancer still remains one of the major killer diseases worldwide and according to the Uganda Cancer Institute statistics a total of 2,800 new cancer cases were reported in 2012 alone.
