Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has been named captain of Germany following the retirement of Bastian Schweinsteiger.

Joachim Loew announced the decision to the rest of his squad on Thursday, the day after Schweinsteiger emotionally bought the curtain down on his international career with his 121st and final cap in the 2-0 win over Finland.

Neuer who made his Germany debut in June 2009, has won 71 caps, playing a key role in the side that captured the World Cup in 2014, earning him the Golden Glove award and a place in the World Cup Dream-team.

Honored by the recognition, Neuer said he relishes the challenge of leading his country.

‘Of course I know that the role of captain has a great symbolic significance and I’m delighted with the faith that the national team coach has placed in me by naming me his captain.’
