Makerere University has been closed indefinitely.
The decision has been announced by the chairman University Council Dr. Charles Wana Etyem during a just ended emergency meeting.
The meeting had been called to discuss the ongoing lecturers’ strike that has paralyzed work at the Ivory Tower.
The lectures are demanding a 100% pay rise.
The closure comes at a time when students were preparing to report for a new semester on Saturday August 17th.
According to Etyem, the council has resolved that all staff must handover movable university property before 4:00pm on Thursday.
No staff is allowed to conduct any business on behalf of the university.
They also resolved to have all the university bank accounts suspended except those used to run day-to-day activities.
All halls of residents are to remain closed though the guest house and all banks are to remain open.
Meanwhile Issuance of admission letters resumes on Monday next week.
