Anti-riot police has been deployed at Makerere University to quell protests by students over its closure.
Makerere University has been closed following a decision by the University Council that was prompted by the continued strike by the staff.
The strike by the Makerere University Academic Staff Association is getting into its third week as they demand for payment of their pension arrears worth 16.7 billion shillings.
A meeting by MUASA held this morning resolved to continue with the strike until government has also considered their demand for a pay rise, with the least paid lecturer taking home 8 million Shillings.
They also want top up allowances paid to staff abolished.
The university council chairman Eng. Dr. Charles Wana Etyem says the university cannot remain open if the staff insist on keeping up with their strike.
Dr. Etyem says transport has already been organized for the students, adding that the college of health sciences will remain operational.
Disabled students will also be allowed to remain at the university.
