LRA’s second in Command Dominic Ongwen is to be flown directly to the Hague for trial by CAR authorities.
According to the army spokesperson Lt. Col Paddy Ankunda, he is expected to be sent to the ICC in the next three days.
This is after he was today handed over to the UPDF by the US Special Forces.
Ongwen is now in custody of the UPDF contingent of the African Union –Regional Task Force in Central African Republic.
Earlier we spoke to the Head of Public Affairs at the US Mission in Kampala Daniel Travis about this development.
Travis said all parties involved including the government of CAR, Uganda, ICC, US, and AU all agreed earlier that the mutual goal was to ensure that Ongwen faces justice.
The UPDF is expected to debrief him as part of military and legal procedures.
In a separate development, the government is not ready to apologise for President Museveni’s recent stinging attacks on International Criminal Court.
In his address during the Kenya’s independence celebrations, Museveni said that he was done with the court and promised to lead a mass exodus of African states from the ICC.
The State minister for Foreign Affairs Henry Okello Oryem says the president had been misunderstood.
His remarks followed government’s decision to forward Lord’s Resistance Army senior commander Dominic Ongwen to The Hague where he is wanted on seven counts of crimes against humanity.
