Kampala Lord Mayor Elias Lukwago has faulted Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA)enforcement team for the death of the woman who drowned yesterday in Nakivubo channel.
According to eye witnesses, 38 year old Olivia Basemera a handkerchief vendor was being chased by KCCA law enforcers and she jumped into the channel as an escape route.
However, KCCA spokesperson Peter Kauju said the woman simply spotted the vehicle from a distance at Jinja Road and she ran up to the channel where she unfortunately died.
Addressing journalists earlier today at his City Hall office, Lukwago called for the arrest of the KCCA officers accused of causing the woman’s death.
Meanwhile, police has arrested four officers from the KCCA enforcement team in connection to the death of the woman.
Speaking to KFM, the deputy police spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan Luke Owoyesigyire says the four were arrested after an investigation was launched yesterday.
He says they are still being interviewed and once investigations are done they shall be charged accordingly.
Relatedly, the family of the deceased has come spoken out about the death of their daughter saying they are not satisfied with the circumstances under which she is said to have died.
Speaking to journalists after a meeting with KCCA officials, the father of the deceased, Patrick Kugonza said although KCCA has given them Shs 5 million to cater for burial arrangements, they are waiting for a police report for further action.
The family is meanwhile demanding KCCA to take care of the orphans or they go to court.
He adds that they are going to transport the body of the late Basemera to Kyenjojo district where she will be buried tomorrow.
