Players in the logistics sector have renewed calls for the government to revive and fast-track the Standard Gauge Railway project.

This, they say will help ease fuel transportation from the coast to Kampala and prevent crises like the most recent.

Uganda was hit by a fuel crisis caused by Covid testing requirements for truck drivers who deliver fuel to Kampala through Kenya’s Malaba border.

The situation was worsened by a breakdown of a Uganda Revenue Authority scanner at the border post.

Jennifer Mwijukye, the Chief Executive Officer, Unifreight Global Logistics says that while improving railway and water transport is a long-term solution, meaningful consultations can help in the meantime.

The fuel crisis was at its worst between 14-18th January when pumps ran dry leading to a sharp rise in prices that reached up to Shs 10,000 in places like Hoima city and some districts in northern Uganda.

This morning a litre of petrol is going for an average of Shs 5,000 while Diesel is going for about Shs 4,900.
