Agago North MP Ogenga Latigo wants the executive arm of government to apologise for allegedly planting mischief against parliament.
Latigo says that that it is without doubt that the executive has asserted a lot of influence on the judiciary with an aim of frustrating parliament’s independence and its oversight role.
He has hailed the Speaker Rebecca Kadaga for upholding the legislative immunity and independence of the house, adding that top leaders of cabinet must come out and apologise to both parliament and the public.
Yesterday Kadaga directed the Attorney General to appeal the court order issued by the Deputy Chief Justice that bars the parliament or any individual from inquiring into the 6 billion-shilling presidential handshake paid out to a select team of 42 government officials who took part in negotiating a Capital Gains Tax Dispute the government brought against Petroleum giants Tullow and Heritage.
In 2015 the arbitration Court in London ordered the two companies to pay Uganda a total of Shs2.4 trillion. It is part of this money that was given out to the officials as a token of appreciation for their effort.
