The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has threatened to revoke licenses and broadcast frequencies of media houses in Kenya that do not observe its guidelines on coverage of demonstrations.
The authority has in a March 22, 2023 statement put on the spot six television stations over their live coverage of the Raila Odinga-led protests on Monday that left a student shot dead, over 200 people arrested and about 30 police officers injured.
The authority’s director general, Ezra Chiloba, has faulted NTV, Citizen TV, K24, KBC, TV47, and Ebru TV for broadcasting the Monday protests which he says caused panic and was a form of incitement to the public and threatened peace.
Chiloba has in the meantime reminded media houses to use the relevant laws in regard to broadcasting as stated in the Communication Act of Kenya or they face the wrath of the law.
Odinga has since called for nationwide protests on Monday and Thursday.
