Kenya last evening beat Uganda 3-0 as the opening game of the International Volleyball Championship qualifiers for women got under way in Nairobi.

The Kenyans won 25-16, 25-10 and 25-14 against a lackluster Ugandan side at the Safaricom Indoor Gymnasium in Kasarani to kick start their championship on a bright note.

Team Uganda suffered from poor ball retention and spiking against their more lively opponents who were cheered by a sizable home crowd.

Ugandan coach Tony Lakony praised the Kenyan team for their spirit but promised an improved performance in their next game against Mozambique.

His Kenyan counterpart David Lung’aho said he expected a tough game from team Uganda which recently returned from a two week training camp in the Netherlands. He however said the team looks set to improve.

In the other earlier games, Tunisia beat Mozambique 3-0 with a 25-11, 25-12 and 25-14 wins in three sets respectively.

Meanwhile Senegal beat the Seychelles 3-1 in a set of four.

Today , Tunisia take on Senegal at 12pm, Uganda take on Mozambique at 2:00pm, and Cape Verde was to take on Kenya but the Islanders did not travel. Officials were by last evening still making changes to the fixtures.
