The Kampala capital city authority has banned smoking in public places in a move to implement the 2015 Tobacco control act.
The Tobacco Control Act seeks to control the demand and supply of the consumption of tobacco and its products and also promote the health of persons.
Launching the campaign dubbed “let’s make Kampala smoke free” the acting KCCA director for public health and environment Daniel Okello said that over 30% of deaths in Kampala are due to non-communicable diseases among them smoking.
He says it from this that the authority has decided to ban public smoking along the road, at work, bars, restaurants and hotels among others.
Those caught smoking are to fined shs 200,000 or six months of imprisonment or both.
