Local leaders in Luweero district are up in arms after anti-riot police yesterday dispersed about 200 residents who staged a peaceful demonstration in protest of what they termed a selective prosecution of graft suspects.
This was in reference to the arrest and remanding of former works minister Eng Abraham Byandala.
Luweero Acting District Police Commander Eugen Elwaru who commanded the operation at Luweero Subcountygrounds said the organizers of the protest had not notified the police about it.
However, Sam Sserunjogi, the Katikamu Subcounty Chairman says they didn’t have to because the residents were simply expressing concern over what they describe as persecution and humiliation of Member of Parliament for Katikamu South Constituency.
Byandala was arrested on Tuesday and remanded to Luzira prison over allegations of corruption in the Mukono-Katosi road project.
He returns to court of August 11th for hearing of his bail application.
