An international human rights watchdog has called for an independent investigation into the Kasese killings saying the death toll was under-reported.

According to the report, over 100 people were killed, 14 police officers and 15 children as opposed to the police report which states that only 103 people were killed in the violence with no case of children reported.

The associate Africa Director for HRW, Maria Burnett says this contradiction thus calls for an independent, impartial fact-finding mission with international expertise to find out the actual numbers of people who died from this incidence.

She says if the independent experts are given unregulated access to witnesses and forensic evidence, they will be able to determine if the November 2016 violence in Kasese equate to a massacre and thus a crime against humanity.

She has further urged that the commanding officers of the military operation which saw the Omusinga Charles Wesley Mumbere’s palace raided and ravaged to step down pending the investigations.
