Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has dragged government to High Court challenging the cruel arrest by the police before his impeachment in 2013 by City Hall councilors.

Lukwago claims that he was violently arrested by the police on 19th November 2013 at his home in Lubaga Division before being driven at break neck speed to Naggalama Police Station in Mukono District.

The lord mayor says he was arrested together with former FDC boss Dr Kizza Besigye with aim of barring him from addressing his Kampala electorate at Nakivubo Blue Primary School on what was happening with his office.

Court documents indicate that the two activists and politicians were charged with ‘being a member of unlawful society, charges they denied.

However, later the Director of Public Prosecutions DPP, Mike Chibita on 11th July 2014, lost interest in pursuing the case and withdrew it.

Lukwago says police’s actions have made him suffer injury, psychological torture, ridicule, pain, mental anguish and gross inconvenience.

He now wants Court to hold government liable for the acts of the police and order it to compensate him. Court is yet to summon the Attorney General to file in his defense before the case is set for hearing
