Road safety advocate Mr Joseph Beyanga, also known as Joe Walker, and friends began their walk to Gulu on Monday to raise public awareness about road safety.
According to the 2024 Police Annual Crime Report, road crashes in Uganda claimed 5,144 lives, meaning an average of 14 people died daily.
Speaking to KFM, Beyanga, while in Maganjo along the Matugga road, stated they were preparing to start their 330km journey.
“The purpose of the walk is to raise awareness about road safety. We will talk to individual road users because you know the cause of these road crashes is careless driving, careless overtaking, and speeding,” Beyanga told KFM on Monday.
He also emphasized the importance of public road discipline.
Meanwhile, the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety has observed a significant increase in road crashes occurring over weekends, particularly between Friday and Sunday.
Speaking at the weekly security press briefing in Kampala on Monday, Director of Traffic and Road Safety Lawrence Nuwabiine stated that many crashes during the Friday-to-Sunday period are attributed to speeding, intoxication, and other traffic violations.
He emphasized that continued efforts are necessary to ensure the safety of all road users in Uganda.
