Education and Sports Minister Janet Museveni has written to all Public Universities assuring them that the government is yet to fulfil its pledge on increasing the salaries of their staff.
In a letter addressed to the chairpersons of all Public University Councils dated April 3rd, Mrs Museveni notes that the government’s commitment to enhance the pay of staff to the level where a professor’s salary is Shs 15 million is still on and binding.
This follows threats by staff members from the six universities including Kyambogo, Makerere, Busitema, Mbarara and Gulu to lay down their tools after learning that their enhancement had not been included in the budget estimates for 2017/2018.
The minister also met all the university heads for a meeting over the weekend and assured them that since the government has for the last two financial years fulfilled its obligation; it will continue to do so.
Speaking to kfm, Makerere university secretary, Charles Barugahare and the Vice Chancellor of Kyambogo University Elly Katunguka confirmed that they were briefed by the first lady and that they have also passed on the communication to their staff.
