A third-year student of Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) at Mbale Campus was last night knocked dead by a boda boda rider, who was attempting to evade arrest by police.
The tragic accident happened near Grace Primary school, along Mbale- Bufumbo road at 9 pm in Mbale City during police’s high-speed chase of a Boda Boda rider over violating curfew.
However, the Officer- In- Charge of Mbale Central Police Station, Arafat Kato said the deceased got involved in an accident while running away from police officers, who were on a night operation.
The deceased identified as 27-year old Ibrahim Mudoma who was pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Education was also riding a motorcycle on his way home in Nabweya cell in Northern City Division when the incident occurred.
Rehema Katono, the IUIU Public Relations Officer confirms that the deceased was a student at the university.
The deceased was carrying a relative, who also sustained severe injuries and he is currently admitted at Mbale Hospital in critical condition.
Shortly after the accident, a group of boda boda riders and relatives of the deceased organized themselves and attacked Mbale Central Police Station, threatening to set it ablaze.
They also carried along with them the body of the deceased, which they dumped at Mbale Central Police station in protest.
During the fracas, some of the riders grabbed one of the police officers at the station and beat him up.
The police officer was only rescued after colleagues intervened by firing live bullets and several of the locals were reportedly injured during the row.
Later, the residents calmed down and decided to carry the body to Bumusili village in Bufumbo Sub County in Mbale District for burial.
