Makerere University has suspended the 10% tuition fees increment for new admissions.
This has been resolved at an emergency meeting held between the Vice Chancellor Professor Dumba Ssentamu, the Inspector General of Police Gen. Kale Kayihura, the chairman of the Academic staff Association Dr. Mohamed Kigundu and the Guild president Ivan Bwowe.
According to the Ssentamu, the university council will hold a meeting on Friday to study the students’ petition and review the fees increment policy.
The meeting was called after the student staged a demonstration this morning protesting the 10% tuition fees increment.
Earlier, an unspecified number of students were injured as police fired tear gas to disperse the demonstrating students.
The university main building is heavily guarded and there is heavy police deployment around the campus.
