The United States has over the weekend announced fresh sanctions against the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Fatou Bensouda.
The U.S. Secretary of State Department Mike Pompeo says the US is not party to the Rome statute and as such will not allow Americans to be threatened by a kangaroo court.
His remarks come at a time the ICC is planning to launch new investigations into alleged war crimes in Afghanistan by both US and Afghan forces alongside a probe into crimes against humanity by the Taliban.
He has also condemned the courts plan to investigate Israel as they push to investigate alleged war crimes committed by forces in the West Bank and in the Gaza strip.
Pompeo alleges that the ICC court is corrupt and unjust.
