A man only identified as Kawalaata by nickname has collapsed at the new taxi park due to suspected hunger.

According to colleagues, he has been earning from carrying people’s luggage.

The Shawuriyako A leader, Yusuf Lwanga says he last met Kawalaata yesterday who complained of having spent a number of days minus eating.

“I met him yesterday and he said he was hungry, I gave him shs 2000,” says Mr Lwanga.

Lwanga has now appealed to the government to help people in downtown especially those who are using the Nakivubo channel and mall verandahs as their homes.

Police and Red Cross services managed to reach on the scene to help reinstate him.

This incident comes just a day after the United Nations released a report showing that the pandemic has spiked world hunger.

This year’s edition of the State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World notes that while the pandemic’s impact is yet to be fully mapped, around a 10th of the global population of which approximately 811 million people  were undernourished last year.

The report jointly published by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Health Organization reveals that hunger shot up, outpacing population growth with some 9.9 percent of all people estimated to have been undernourished, up from 8.4% in 2019.
