Rights Bodies Disagree With Parliament Over Enforcement Bill

Human rights bodies have disagreed with the parliamentary committee on human rights over the proposed Human Rights Enforcement Bill 2015.

This bill now at committee stage, seeks to vest all powers of addressing human rights violation in high courts.

Currently the responsibility of addressing human rights violations lies with the Uganda Human Rights Commission mainly handled under the commission’s tribunal.

While interfacing with this committee, the commission’s director legal services Ruth Ssekindi said once this bill is passed in its form, it will duplicate the work of the tribunal.

She says shifting this responsibility to high court is ironical because Uganda has only 20 courts in the whole country thus unable to handle all these cases.
