HIV/AIDS Prevalence rate at 33% among Prostitutes

| July 28, 2011

Results from a survey released today indicate that the HIV/AIDS prevalence rate among prostitutes stands at 33%.

This is according to research conducted by Crane Survey and Makerere University School of Public Health.

The findings indicate that 66% of the prostitutes interviewed are also married

The project manager Crane Survey George William Lubwama says the prevalence rate is high because many of the prostitutes interviewed testified that they don’t use protection.

Many of the prostitutes say they don’t engage in any gainful employment while those that are single said they had been married before.

Lubwama is now appealing to government to use the findings from the study to address the plight of the prostitutes.

Some of the prostitutes who were present at the release of the findings appealed to government to help them engage in productive activities instead of criticizing them.
