Uganda Red Cross and the Ministry of health have embarked on a blood donation drive in Gulu district, following the shortage of blood that has hit the district due to increases cases of malaria.
According to Charles Kidega, the blood donor recruitment manager at Red Cross Gulu, they have decided to use this holiday since most of the blood donors are students.
The 2015 district health report also indicates that between 9,000 and 10,000 cases of transfusion are reported weekly from St Mary’s Hospital Lacor, Gulu Regional Referral Hospital and various health centres in the district.
The report also shows that from Between May and December 2015, 152 deaths have been reported with majority being children and expectant mothers.
