Government has agreed to increase cooperation in child protection from online risks and abuses across the country.

Speaking at the commemoration of the Day of the African Child 2023 celebrations held in Kampala, the minister of state for Youth and Children Affairs. Ms Sarah Mateke Nyirabashitsi said that government has plans to scale up transformative digital programmes that will target the most vulnerable, such as the U learn, Coding Girls, and up-shift across the country.

Mateke said teaching digital literacy is crucial and it helps to keep children informed, engaged, and safe through recognizing and protecting themselves from online dangers.

She added that leveraging the power of the private sector is essential in advancing ethical standards and practice that protects and benefits children online.

Meanwhile, the Rising Voices communications manager of violence against children prevention, Tabitha Suubi encouraged parents to model the positive online behaviours they want to see in their children.

This year’s event was held under the theme, “promoting and protecting children’s rights in the digital Era”.
