The government of Uganda is yet to determine the fate of nearly 7,000 students who did not pass the 2024 Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) exams.
Dr. Kedrace Turyagyenda, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education and Sports, said the ministry is still addressing the issue and will announce its decision in due course.
“The process has started but it has not ended. For government issues to come out to the general public, we would have gone through a number of stages for approval. For now, the community should know that we are thinking and working to see that we can make that provision,” she said.
According to data from the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB), these students did not achieve at least a D grade in any subject, disqualifying them from receiving a certificate. Under the old curriculum, they would have been placed in Division 9, indicating failure.
Previously, these students would have been advised to retake the exam. However, the Ministry of Education has not yet clarified whether this will be the case under the new curriculum.
This uncertainty follows UNEB’s statement that only certified students qualify for Senior Five, raising questions about whether these students will be required to repeat Senior Four, return to Senior Three, or even Senior One.
