The government spends over Shs1.5 billion per month on providing medical care to accident victims in the country. This has been revealed by Hon. Hanifa Kawooya, the state minister for health in charge of general duties while appearing before parliament’s committee on physical infrastructure.
The committee was responding to the interventions by the ministry on the increased road carnage in the country.
The minister told members of the committee that the average cost of treating a critically ill accident patient at Mulago national referral hospital is Shs3.6 million daily which rises to Shs13.6 million for those requiring surgery.
“When we move to cost of care, the average cost of treating a critically ill patient is about 3.6 millon Uganda shillings per day. With surgical intervention, the cost rises to 13.6 millon Uganda shillings which translates to 648 million shillings for the care of an average of 180 ctiritally injured patients at the A&E Mulago national referral hospital,” Kawooya told MPs.
The chairperson of the committee, David Karubanga has tasked the ministry to provide more elaborative data on how much the country loses in treatment of accident victims per hospital countrywide.
