With just 3 months to the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference, the government is asked to step up its climate action efforts by establishing a Disaster Fund.
This also comes as torrential rains cause havoc in the Eastern districts of Mbale, Sironko, and Kapchorwa, where at least 10 people died as a result of flash floods.
Climate activist and Deputy Executive Director Environment Shield, Robert Turyakira now calls for strengthening of the disaster risk reduction department in the Office of the Prime Minister to avoid such preventable deaths in the future.
He tells KFM that this will guarantee a swift response to climate-related disasters like floods, drought, and acute food shortages being experienced in Karamoja and many other parts of the country.
The 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference, more commonly referred to as COP27, will be the 27th United Nations Climate Change conference, to be held from 6 to 18 November 2022 in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt.
