Government tightens noose on labor export

Reporter | November 28, 2014

The ministry of Gender is to start back ground checks on all Ugandan girls travelling abroad to work as house maids.

This is after the Saudi Arabian authorities warned their citizens against hiring Ugandan house maids, in reaction to a video clip showing a maid mauling a one year old toddler.

The Ministry’s commissioner for children affairs Kyateka Mondo says they will work with Ugandan embassies to do background checks on those intending to work abroad.

Kyateeka says they will also issue strict guidelines to all licensed labour exporting companies to ensure that the reputation of the country is not undermined.

This comes after the Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga called for a total ban on export of labour from Uganda.
