By Benjamin Jumbe

Scientists at the Uganda Virus Research Institute are optimistic that the novel genetic technology for vector control will be in place by 2030.

The experts are currently conducting research on development of Genetically Modified Mosquitoes to be used to fight malaria.

Principle Investigator of the Target Malaria project in Uganda Dr Jonathan Kayondo says with gene drive technology they are focusing on population suppression of mosquitoes that spread Malaria

He however says although the final product is expected around 2030, they will have experimental releases of the modified mosquitoes in 2025.

In 2018, the World Health Organization (WHO) ranked Uganda among the top 10 malaria burdened countries in sub-Saharan Africa, which has some of the highest reported malaria transmission rates in the world.
