Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Deputy Executive Director, Mr David Luyimbazi has announced that the Authority is yet to find an alternative dumping site for the city’s garbage and has now turned to Cabinet for intervention.
He says that with the looming deadline for using Nkumba – Bufulu Landfill as a temporary dumping ground, they are now seeking the intervention of the Cabinet sitting at State House Entebbe today, August 19, 2024, to find a resolution.
On Friday last week, Entebbe Municipality officials issued a four-day ultimatum to KCCA, which expires today.
Luyimbazi emphasized that the issue extends beyond Kampala, affecting neighboring areas including Wakiso, Kira, Makindye Ssabagabo, and Mukono. He believes it requires immediate attention from the Cabinet, which is scheduled to meet at State House Entebbe today.
“Even where they are chasing us, that land was bought with government money, that landfill was not bought with the Mayor’s or councilors’ money. Nansana didn’t buy Menvu with their own money, it was government money so this is a national issue where government must help us prevail over these jurisdictions to conduct themselves in a peaceful way otherwise the city is choking,” he said.
Entebbe Mayor, Mr Fabrice Rulinda has raised concerns about the potential impact of marabou stocks, which thrive on dumpsites, on the safety of aircraft at Entebbe International Airport.
