Fuel tank accident

The death toll from the fuel tanker explosion has risen to 34.

By yesterday the toll stood at 30 while four of the injured remained in very critical conditions.

Earlier the police Commander Kampala Metropolitan Andrew Felix Kaweesi said the number of the dead could rise.

More relatives are also expected to pick up the dead bodies today.

By yesterday evening, the police said 15 of dead bodies had been identified and five have already been picked up.

The police have also set up two centres at Mulago hospital, one at the casualty wing and another near Mulago police from where relatives can identify the injured.

29 people died on the spot on Saturday night when a fuel tanker registration number KBC 361B exploded.

The tanker is said to have been spilling but was knocked from the rear by a Toyota Noah bearing the number plates UAS 374 C which made it to spill more fuel.

It later caught fire when a number of boda boda cyclists and passersby started siphoning fuel.

Police say the fuel tanker was heading to Mbarara.

The accident occurred at Namungoona near the Northern bypass.
