FDC president Rtd. Col Dr Kizza Besigye has called for unity in the party, following the just concluded campaigns.

He was speaking while addressing delegates at Namboole stadium, where voting will take place today for the party’s new leaders.

He has castigated instances in which the candidates attacked each other during the campaign period, saying some patterns of behavior were contrary to the values FDC stands for.

Col. Besigye also praised FDC for leading the quest for democracy in the country but challenged the members to work towards a stronger and inspiring party

Elections are to be held later in the day, with the race between Maj. Gen Mugusha Muntu, Nandala Mafabi, and Geoffrey Ekanya.

Leaders from other political parties are observing the event, including the Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, CP’s Ken Lukyamuzi, JEEMA’s Asuman Basalirwa and former Buganda Katikiro Mulwanyamuli Ssemogerere.

Meanwhile, the new FDC leadership is being challenged to find creative ways of raising funds for the party activities.

The outgoing party president Col. Kizza Besigye says funding for the party remains the biggest challenge.

He says the party secretariat is grossly understaffed while a number of planned activities cannot take place due to lack of funding.

Besigye is now challenging the upcoming leaders to ensure that existing gaps in fundraising are filled;
