Mr. Mohammad Luwemba, the longtime aide to the late Kawempe North MP Muhammad Ssegirinya, has officially announced his candidature as an independent in the upcoming Kawempe North MP by-election.
The decision follows his failure to secure the National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket to represent the party. On Monday, the determined aspirant unveiled a watch as his campaign symbol.
KFM recently reported that NUP declared lawyer Erias Luyimbazi Nalukoola as its official flag bearer for the by-election.
After holding consultation meetings across the nine parishes of Kawempe North on Monday, Luwemba told the media that voters had urged him to run as an independent so he could better advocate for his former boss’ agenda if elected.
“There’s no way for you to decide when the people have not endorsed you. For now, the people of Kawempe North have endorsed me to stand for that position and now I can assure you that my symbol is the clock,” he said.
Speaking to journalists on Monday, he denied allegations that he is set to receive funds from the Mathias Mpuuga-led Democratic Alliance for his campaign.
The Electoral Commission scheduled March 13, 2025, as the voting day to fill the vacant Kawempe North MP seat.
