Lt. Col Eugine Ssebugwawo, the ex-commander of the UPDF under the African Union Mission in Somalia has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for diverting fuel meant for peace keeping operations.

Ssebugwawo, the former in charge of logistics and administration under Battle Group Nine plus in Somalia, will serve his sentence at the Military Police headquarters in Makindye, a Kampala suburb.

While delivering the sentence court martial chairman Maj Gen Levi Karuhanga considered the mitigation factors submitted in by the state led by MajFredrickkangwamu that since the accused was on a foreign mission he damaged the image of the UPDF and that such cases have become rampant among the army officers.

Prosecution says that Ssebugwawo sold fuel for his personal gains in exchange for money.
