The European Union is calling on Uganda to step up mediation efforts in Burundi urgently, following the death of over 80 people on Friday.

In a statement issued on Sunday afternoon by Catherine Ray the Spokesperson, of the EU High Representative and Vice President, Ms Federica Mogherini, the EU says the attacks against military camps are evidence of a step change in the violence and repression which has shaken Burundi in recent months.

She says these unacceptable acts represent a further destabilizing element for the country that affects all Burundian citizens.

Ray says the dialogue under Ugandan mediation needs to begin urgently, with all the actors concerned.

She adds that the EU is ready to mobilize all its support in order to ensure that a political solution to the grave crisis across Burundi can be found quickly.

The EU also regrets the loss of life the unrest has caused.
