Members of Parliament on the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) have raised concerns over the low staffing levels at Entebbe Regional Referral Hospital.
The issue came up after it was revealed that the hospital has only 181 staff members against the 1,198 required to serve a catchment population of 3.7 million people.
John Bosco Nsubuga, the Acting Director of Entebbe Regional Referral Hospital, appeared before the committee alongside representatives from other hospitals.
According to him, most patients come from the districts of Wakiso, Kampala, Mpigi, Nakaseke, Kalangala, and Butambala, significantly increasing the workload on the available staff.
Gorreth Namugga, the PAC Vice Chairperson has questioned whether the hospital was prematurely elevated to regional referral status, given its low staffing levels and its failure to achieve the 450-bed capacity expected of a regional referral hospital.
The MPs have also expressed concern over the government’s failure to release the Shs 29 million allocated to Entebbe Hospital for development expenditure, insisting that more funds need to be sent to the hospital.
