The Electoral Commission says it has no mandate to organize elections for the Taxi operators in Kampala.
This follows reports that KCCA had requested the commission to organize elections for leaders of the taxi operators amid disagreements between the players.
The Electoral Commission Spokesperson Jotham Taremwa says they only nominated a person to chair a technical committee set up by KCCA to design guidelines for the Taxi Operators’ election.
Taremwa says this however does not mean that the commission is taking over the role of organizing and conducting the election.
Earlier city Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago advised KCCA to put in place rules of procedure regarding the taxi business before organizing any election.
He says unless KCCA streamlines the industry, not even elections will stop the current wrangling.
