The East African Court of Justice(EACJ) is today set to hear a case in which former East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) Speaker Margaret Zziwa is challenging her impeachment.
Zziwa was impeached in December 2014 impeached in a majority vote of 36 members who voted in favour of the motion, two opposed while one abstained from the vote.
She was accused by her colleagues of what they described as irregular behavior, poor governance and leadership skills, abuse of office, in addition to disrespect and intimidation of MPs and House staff among other things.
She was replaced by the Rt. Hon. Daniel Kidega (Uganda).
In her case versus the Secretary General, Ms Zziwa alleges that the process of her censure was illegal and an infringement of Articles 53 and 56 of the Treaty for the establishment of the EAC.
The application is to be heard by 5 justices led by the principle judge, Lady Justice Monica Mugenyi, at the EAC Headquarters in Arusha, Tanzania. The others are Honorable Mr. Justice Isaac Lenaola Deputy Principal Judge, Honorable Dr. Justice Faustin Ntezilyayo, Honorable Mr. Justice Fakihi A. Jundu and Honorable Mr. Justice Audace Ngiye.
On Wednesday this week Ms. Zziwa was back in the news for her outbursts during a session by the regional parliament to honour the outgoing EAC Secretary General Dr. Richard Sezibera in which she said she deserved the honor and credit and not the Secretary General for the various achievements.
