More than 400 truck drivers transporting a variety of merchandises
mostly from Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda have ended their four-day
strike and resumed transporting goods to Juba capital in South Sudan.
The drivers had staged a protest at Elegu border post in Amuru district last week and refused to cross to South Sudan over claims that South Sudanese officials were extorting a lot of money from them in the form of revenues and traffic dues.
They also alleged that the Sudan People’s Liberation Army soldiers
had failed to provide them with proper military escorts in the wake of renewed attacks by unknown gunmen along the Nimule-Juba Highway.
Aswa Regional Police Spokesperson Jimmy Patrick Okema says the drivers have called off the strikes after South Sudanese government officials assured them of maximum security.
The resolution followed a meeting held on Friday
between the drivers, a Ugandan delegation and officials from South Sudan.
Okema says the last 40 trucks were driven this afternoon across the border into South Sudan.
