The opposition Democratic Party has called for the unconditional release of the Makerere University Research Fellow Dr. Stella Nyanzi who was yesterday sent to Luzira prison.

The feminist academic who was arrested on 7 April appeared before Buganda Road Magistrates Court where she pleaded not guilty and was remanded until 25 April for criticizing the President and the First Lady on Facebook for failure to deliver on promise of sanitary pads to school girls.

Addressing journalists at the party headquarters, the Democratic Party President Norbert Mao says the charges leveled against Nyanzi especially the one on computer misuse has no place in the current information age.

Mao has thus called for the repeal of the Computer Misuse Act by parliament and all charges against Nyanzi dropped.

He adds that Nyanzi stands for a noble cause and is a true citizen of the country who has fundamental human rights as prescribed by the law.

According to prosecution she faces charges of cyber harassment under the computer misuse Act 2011 and offensive communication.
