Doctors vow to shut down all hospitals, want salary increment implemented

Medical practitioners have vowed to shut down all hospitals across the country if the government does not effect their salary increments as recently directed by President Museveni.

They have issued a one-month ultimatum to the government to ensure that the said salary changes are reflected in their pay lest they withdraw their services.

The President of the Uganda Medical Association Dr Richard Idro has also decried the tendency of the government to respond to their pleas only after industrial action, which he says is unfair and drains them.

The medics are demanding that their pay be increased from the current Shs5m and Shs7m for graduate medical doctors and consultants respectively.

Last month cabinet resolved to increase salaries for scientists, doctors, and teachers first after the President recommended that medical interns’ pay be increased from Sh750,000 to Sh2,500,000.
